The brief from North Lanarkshire Council was to create a vibrant underpass design that incorporated the industrial heritage of the Coatbridge area.
Using archive photographs and vector illustration, the design solution is based on two aspects of the area's rich industrial past. On one wall, the fiery pig beds, widely used in the local Ironworks. On the other side the rippling waters following a canal barge. The local Monklands canal was the vein of supply from nearby Glasgow and was integral to the area's growth.
The underpass was installed in 2009 by 6274 Public Art on digitally printed tiles.
